Black Water

As an Island, Montreal has a close relationship with the St-Lawrence River, on which it lies. Historically this unique location is what established the city as one of the first settlements in North America. The river was a strong economic driving force until the 1980s and now it is seen mainly as a barrier. The city of Xiamen is a popular tourist destination for many Chinese, often seen as romantic and is often referred to the Venice of China. The beaches surrounding the city are full of props, used by the many local photographers to pose couples. Drawing inspiration from Ferit Kuyas "Chongqing - City of Ambition" and Kentaro Takahashi "The Riverbed", this project uses landscape photography and storytelling to investigate our relationship to water. “Black Water” is a series of photographs that was produced during a residency at the Chinese European Art Center in Xiamen, China.
